My experience with the Garmin 205 has been very good. To begin, the unit is quick to lock on to the satellites and begin tracking. If you turn it on and head outside for a run it should be up and running long before you finish your basic stretching. We have found that it will lock into enough satellites to function indoors if there are windows in close proximity. Outdoors the signal acquisition and ability to remain locked into a signal is very good. Accuracy was also very good; the unit can detect small movements of just a couple of feet. When the elapsed distance was checked against a known measured mile the accuracy was within about 15 feet, much better than most of us would ever need.

You might be inclined to compare the Garmin 201 with the 205 and that is where the 205 really shines. The 205 is a "watch", the size is certainly larger than a typical digital watch but since it is not intended for every day use this is not an issue. The 201 by contrast, is more like wearing an iPod or pager. It is a rectangular shaped unit which is strapped to the arm with a Velcro strap. The 205 uses a wristband made of rubber so it will be easier to keep clean and will not absorb perspiration. The buttons are simple and intuitive, enough so, that most people will quickly become accustomed to using it.

Computer software is available for use in downloading your GPS data which allows complete review of your workout. You can display in chart format how fast you were going, position, elevation, etc. and it also can be displayed on a road map. The 205 itself doesn't have a map feature like you would see with a GPS in a car. It does include a very basic map which is referred to as "Bread Crumb" mapping where it illustrates where you have been with a dotted line. This feature could be helpful to return to your starting position if used in an unfamiliar area.

Instant readings are a relative thing with any type of GPS unit. The slight lag in updating is well within a reasonable time period and never gave us any concern. If overhead trees, roofs, tall buildings etc, are too dense the signal can be affected or lost but we found the 205 to be quite good in operating in moderate tree cover. The 205 maintained signals at least as well as any other GPS unit we have used and if a the signal is lost it is reacquired quickly once clear of the obstacle.

Most people should be quite satisfied with this unit provided that a heart rate monitor is not desired. If the heart rate monitor is desired and we think it should be, for any serious training the Garmin forerunner 305 would be a better choice. Having said that, we have seen prices discounted well below $200 for the 205, making it a great option for a GPS tracking watch.

Recent back country disasters have highlighted the value of personal GPS tracking units. The emergency signal was received and local authorities used a hand held GPS unit to literally guide them to within a few feet of her. A casual search on the Internet yielded more than 30 websites where these GPS tracking and locator device can be purchased. Some SAR officials have proposed regulations requiring the mandatory possession of these devices by back country visitors. In fact in some locations these devices can be rented by backpackers and other wild country visitors.

Given the cost of SAR response it would seem very reasonable for everyone to carry such a device when in the remote areas of the world. These devices do in fact work anywhere there are GPS and communication satellites above the horizon. New innovations in technology continue reduce the size of GPS tracking units and make them even more rugged and reliable. It goes without say that it would be wise for every person contemplating a back country trip to invest in this life saving technology.

If you want to shoot the moon and get the cutting edge of current automotive GPS technology, then it's $900 for the Garmin nuvi 880.

So, anywhere from $150 to $900 is the price range, and you can get excellent devices at all the price points. Before you dive into the marketplace, however, you need to get a handle on how much you want to spend.

Believe it or not, when these things are refurbished, they are literally made as if they were brand new again. It seems that a lot of people tend to frown upon the fact that the item (especially electronics) at one point may have had something wrong with it; however, this is certainly something that you need not worry about.

First of all, a lot of these systems end up with the title "remanufactured" or "refurbished" simply because they became over stock at a retail store, and were then sent back to Garmin, who then simply labeled them as "refurbished" and them sold them back to stores and shops at dramatically less than their normal retail value. Also, a lot of the times the reason an item gets sent back to be "refurbished" is due to the box taking some external damage, or components missing, and so on. So in this case, there was literally never any physical damage to the item.

Lastly, for the refurbished GPS devices that actually did have some kind of physical problem or defect, they are literally fixed to the point where they are like new again, and whatever parts they needed were replaced, even if it was just cosmetic. Also, refurbished Garmin Streetpilot c340 GPS systems come in a box (non retail), and come with all of the original accessories and goodies. They even carry a manufacture warranty again too. So does it Get You There?

The Downside

There must have been some pretty big differences, I thought, because the prices ranged from a low of about $150 to almost $1000 for portable units-the kind you can stick to your windshield and remove to take with you when you're out of the car.

Well, suffice it to say, I did an enormous amount of research and became an expert of sorts.

To save you some time and frustration, let me tell you the basics of what I found out.

Although there are several manufacturers of portable automotive GPS systems, the three main ones are Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom. Garmin sells about half of the automotive GPS systems in the world, but Tom Tom is quickly catching up. All three companies make a good product, it's just that understanding the differences between the three manufacturers and their specific products is a little difficult.

Garmin has two main lines of automotive GPS systems, the Nüvi and the StreetPilot. The functionalities of each line overlap quite as bit, so does their price.

In general, the Nüvi's are sleeker, more compact units. Their interface (how you use the system) is not quite as straightforward as the StreetPilot's interface. Garmin Nüvi's come in a broad price range, from less than $200 for the Nüvi 200 to almost $1000 for the Nüvi 770. Per price point, Nüvi's generally have a few more features than StreetPilots.

The main difference between the Nüvi's and the StreetPilots, however, are these-according to Garmin, Nüvi's have a high-sensitivity receiver, whereas StreetPilots do not. Nüvi's weigh about half as much as StreetPilots. (None of these units is heavy, just StreetPilots weigh almost 10 ounces, where Nüvi's weigh slighlty more than 5 ounces.

The biggest difference between the two units is the user interface. The StreetPilot "c" series was made expressly to be very intuitive and user friendly. This is not to say the Nüvi's are not, they're just not super simple, like the StreetPilots.

Tom Tom has devices that directly compete with Garmin's. The Tom Tom One, for instance, is comparable to the Garmin Nüvi 200, Garmin's entry level product. Both are basic GPS systems which come pre-loaded with maps, have touch screen, and voice instructions. The Tom Tom One has a battery with only 2 hours average life, where the Nüvi's battery will last an average of 5 hours.

To my mind, the Tom Toms are not quite as sleek looking at the Nüvi's, although their quality seems to be comparable.

Magellan does not have the market share of Garmin or Tom Tom, but they still build a good product. The Magellan Maestro 3100 is a big seller on Amazon. In both price and features, it's comparable to the Tom Tom One and to Garmin's lower priced units, both in size and weight. Magellan says their battery lasts up to three hours, fifty percent better than the Tom Tom's.

One of the biggest differences between the cheaper GPS systems and the more expensive ones is the number of "Points of Interest" in the unit's database.

Points of interest are preloaded hotels, restaurants, business locations, hospitals, basically anywhere you might like to go, which are included in your devices database. The Magellan Maestro, for instance has 750,000 points of interest. The Garmin Nüvi 200 comes with approximately 6 million!

If you're going to use your GPS for traveling, having more points of interest available might be a key feature, and when you consider the distances involved, 750,000 items is just not that many.

Another feature I think is important is Bluetooth technology. Your higher priced units can work as a cell phone (both making and receiving calls). It's hard enough (and even illegal in some areas) driving and talking on your cell phone. Add looking at your GPS to that mix, and...well, you might want to pull to the side of the road. To my mind, the fewer devices to keep up with the better.

Over the years GPS receivers have really changed and mostly for the better. It seems yearly new features are added and others are updated to give you the best possible equipment to use to find your way around this crazy world we live in. Most people who have GPS units will tell you how valuable these things are and we have compiled a list of the key features that you will want to have on your unit. The bigger screen lets you see more and gives you greater detail than a much smaller screen. This is something that I have found to be invaluable especially if you are traveling. If you can afford the bigger screen by all means go bigger as you will enjoy the view.

Points of interest are another area that can vary with each company who makes the GPS unit. Some companies will have more listings than others so you will want to check that out. Many of these companies though will let you go to their web site and download more if you want to. For the most part though you should more than enough points of interest that you get from the factory install.

In recent years, SD and CF cards have been the wave of the future. These cards let you hold additional information that you can insert into your GPS unit to give yourself even more information. This is valuable especially if you travel a lot and do not want to download new maps and information all the time all you have to do is change the memory card that you have. It saves time and the other advantage is it will not slow down the machine as often as a full memory card will.

The GPS features that we have talked about above is definitely ones that you will want to take a closer look at and if you do not have them an upgrade is maybe what you need. Most of these upgrades are not very expensive at all and some companies are now making this all-standard equipment on some models as well.
