Portable systems run from less than $200 to almost $1000US. All of these GPS devices find your location and show you routes on maps. All of them preloaded with maps of the United States and Canada. (A few of the cheaper ones only come with regional maps.) What makes the difference in price is quality of the maps and what are called "points of interest", along with a whole slew of extra (but useful) features.

The size of the points of interest database is important. Points of interest are preloaded addresses and information about businesses, civic buildings, hospitals, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, schools, and generally any destination that you might want to go to.

The cheaper systems only have about 750,000 points of interest preloaded in them. That sounds like a lot, but when you consider how big the United States and Canada are, 750,000 restaurants, hospitals, gas stations, ATM's, and Starbucks is not really that much. The better systems have a few million points of interest. Definitely something worth considering, especially if you'll be using your system while traveling. Of course, if you're only using your GPS close to home then the number of points of interest might not matter-then again, you might not need the GPS system. J

There are a few features that are important to consider.

The user interface (how easy the unit is to use) is important. Some systems like the Garmin Nuvi's are like mini computers, they do so much. I'm not saying avoid the Nuvi-I happen to like that line of products a lot. Just be aware that you might have to read the instructions the first time you use it. Much to Garmin's credit, the StreetPilot C series was designed to be extremely easy to use. If I were going to buy my 86-year old mother-in-law an automotive GPS system, it might well be the StreetPilot c340.

As you climb higher in price range, you get more features. Some are not that important, like having a travel clock. My car has a clock, so I don't think I need two. Bluetooth technology is a feature you might want if you use your cell phone a lot in the car. Bluetooth lets you use your GPS as a cell phone. So, you're limiting the number of devices you have to keep up with in the car-always a good idea when negotiating a busy expressway interchange.

The mid to upper range GPS systems have mp3 players so you can listen to music and audiobooks. That's neat if everyone else in the car wants to listen to the same thing. If not, well I guess everyone will have to use their own iPod.

The display size is a biggie! The last thing you want to be doing in traffic is straining to see the GPS screen. Many of these product lines have widescreen versions. That translates to 4.3-inch screens. That's almost an inch bigger than the 3.5-inch screen. For some people, it does make a difference.

Pre-Loaded Maps

The first factor to consider is what maps you need pre-loaded in your GPS. That, of course depends on where you plan to travel. Many systems come with road maps for the entire United States and Canada loaded into their main memory. Some come with all of North America and some come with Europe as well. This gives you the luxury to go anywhere without worrying about whether or not you loaded the proper maps; it also makes the device ready-to-roll, right out of the box. Pre-loaded maps occupy part of the main memory of the GPS; any excess main memory can be used for additional maps, MP3 music, or custom POI's. This brings us to memory capacity.

Memory Capacity

How much memory your GPS can hold is very important as well. If you purchase a unit that has very little extra main memory, and can't be expanded; you may find yourself unable to add features or points-of-interest (POI) when you want. Many GPS models only contain enough main memory to hold their pre-loaded maps, with very little left over. This is only a problem if they do not have a memory expansion slot. A memory expansion slot allows you to add memory to the GPS should you ever need it. Most take a Secure Digital (SD) card for memory expansion. SD cards are inexpensive and a great way to add memory to your unit when you need it. More expensive units typically have a considerable amount of their main memory free for your use, and also have a memory expansion slot. Less expensive units typically use most or all of their main memory for built-in features, but most of them still have a memory expansion slot.

Text To Speach

Another important feature to look for is "text-to-speech." Most voice-prompting GPS units will give an audio notification such as "Turn left in 300 feet" or "Take next exit." A unit with a text-to-speech function will speak not only the direction but the name of the street as well: "Turn left onto Mulberry Lane in 300 feet" or "Take Exit 23A." This is a huge help for many people, especially RV'ers, as they won't even have to glance at the screen to know where to go.

Live Traffic Service

A great new feature to consider is live traffic service. Available in larger cities, a subscription to a traffic service gives you real-time, up-to-the-minute updates on traffic and road conditions. Freeway's blocked from Exit 23 to Exit 29? Your GPS will notify you and offer an alternative route. After a free trial period, traffic service typically costs about $7/month. Some Garmin units also offer XM Radio services, so that you can get not only live traffic but XM Satellite Radio as well.

Even beyond a typical traffic service is the new Enhanced MSN Direct service. Many of the upper-end Garmin units, like the Nuvi 780 come with this capability. With MSN Direct, you can check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and then wirelessly send locations to your GPS. Like a traffic service, MSN Direct carries a monthly charge after the free trial period.

Bluetooth Enabled

One of the newest additions to GPS systems is the integration of a Bluetooth chip. Garmin's GPS systems are priced competitively with Magellan's and Tom Tom's. All three of these manufacturers have base models that start around $150. With Garmin, their introductory model is the Nuvi 200, which has all the basic features I mentioned above. In comparison, the Nuvi 200 does about the same thing as the Magellan Maestro 3100 and the Tom Tom One.

If you want more bells and whistles, you can upgrade to the Garmin Nuvi 350. With the 350 you get more maps, more POIs, and real-time traffic capability. Currently the Nuvi 350 runs around $200. This would be approximately comparable to the Magellan Maestro 3250, which does essentially the same for essentially the same price.

Garmin has two popular series of automotive, after-market GPS systems, the Nuvi and the older StreetPilot. The Nuvi's are sleeker than the StreetPilots. The StreetPilots, however, offer a few features that the Nuvi's do not.

Garmin's top of the line Nuvi is the 770, which comes with everything--maps of the United States, Canada, and Europe, real-time traffic, Bluetooth, and more. Currently the Nuvi 770 runs around $600. If you want to switch to their StreetPilot line, you can get what might be considered the most fully featured automotive GPS device on the market, the StreetPilot 7500. This baby does it all--and it's going to set you back a cool $1,000. (But for the size of the screen and the features, it's worth it!)

I'm not saying you have to buy a Garmin. Magellan and Tom Tom make great GPS devices. But Garmin is the industry leader, by far!

Most stores are selling the Sony NV-U83T for around the $400 range. However, it can be found for cheaper than that. Some stores are going as low as the mid $300's. Despite the price tag, in the end the NV-U83T is a great navigation unit.
