Garmin is now one of the largest manufacturers in car GPS devices and these devices were widely praised for their easy usability and accurate performance. But back then, Garmin didn't focus on that audience and started small with handheld GPS devices instead. More than a decade ago, the Garmin Etrex was introduced and gained a lot of attention for its lightweight, waterproof, and bright yellow design. Currently, Garmin Etrex GPS devices are being sold today for budget consumers and frequent travelers.

Garmin Etrex H Handheld GPS

The Garmin Etrex H is the most affordable of the entire series and has the same design as the early eTrex that gained its popularity long ago. Priced at just $100, the eTrex can be operated with one hand to press any of the five buttons that can be found on both sides. It is also rugged to encourage travelling under tougher conditions as its accuracy is still maintained rather well. It is WAAS-enabled for better accuracy without the service fees and can store 500 waypoints in its memory. Although the screen isn't colored and incapable of displaying street or terrain maps, it is a highly accurate device for budget outdoor enthusiasts.

Garmin Etrex Legend Models

The eTrex Legend models consist of 2 models that both add on to the features of the eTrex H. The Garmin eTrex Legend H stands on the budget end costing slightly higher than the eTrex H. Those that want basemaps of cities, lakes, rivers, highways, and coastlines should benefit well from this versatile navigator. Other maps can be stored in its 24 MB internal memory as well.

The eTrex Legend HCx model is a bit wider in shape, but the most noticeable feature is the 256-color screen display that can be seen under direct sunlight. It also has a microSD card slot so different memory sizes can be used to store more optional maps. Like the Legend H, waypoints can also be transferred to and from the computer via USB. The only downside is that the Legend HCx costs nearly twice as much as the Legend H.

Garmin Etrex Vista Models

The eTrex GPS Vista are basically a step up of the Legend models adding additional features including a built-in electronic compass to get bearings statistics and a barometric altimeter that keeps track of the changes in pressure which gives you a more accurate altitude reading. This feature works even if you are standing still. The eTrex Vista H is the affordable model that can still be purchased for under $200, but has a monochrome display like the Legend H.

The eTrex Vista HCx model has the same features, but a color display instead. It is the most expensive of the series priced at $270 or around $330 if the pack is purchased which comes with a DVD, case, and 128 MB MicroSD card.

Other Garmin Etrex Models

If the HCx models are too expensive, there are two other models that both have color screen displays. The eTrex Venture HC is a high-performing GPS device that costs less than the monochrome Vista H. It lacks the built-in compass and barometric altimeter, but it has the same yellow design and shape as the original eTrex and contains the same 24 MB internal memory for storing maps. The eTrex Summit has similar features as Vista HCx, but costs less because of the absence of an SD card slot.
